Although I love makeup – especially when it’s applied well, in fact some might call me the lipstick queen, I also really appreciate women who can pull off a no makeup look. One of my favorite actresses that does this really well is Frances Louise McDormand. From what I understand, Frances McDormand is one whonever paid much attention to Hollywood archetypes. From herloud blue headpiece and Met Gala outfit to accepting her Best Actress awards at the 2018 Oscars and Golden Globes sans makeup, the actress holds true to her critically acclaimed role of a rebellious mom in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Frances McDormand has always walked a different path than your typical Hollywood starlet. A recent New York Times profile of McDormand and her husband, Fargo director Joel Coen, put the spotlight on her dislike for plastic surgery.
“I have not mutated myself in any way,” she said. “Joel and I have this conversation a lot. He literally has to stop me physically from saying something to people – to friends who’ve had work. I’m so full of fear and rage about what they’ve done.”
Despite being a 60-something who disregards beauty norms, her no-frills approach is attracting attention from some of Hollywood’s hottest actors. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson told Ellen DeGeneres on her show Ellen that he has a crush on McDormand.
And how could he not?
McDormand has been a mainstay in American cinema since the 1980s when the Coen brothers catapulted both her and roommate Holly Hunter into the spotlight. Since then, she’s won numerous awards, including two Academy Awards (Fargo and Three Billboards), two Golden Globes (Short Cuts and Three Billboards), two Primetime Emmys (Olive Kitteridge), and a Tony (Good People).
While she doesn’t condone plastic surgery, she still manages a smooth, even skin tone with no dark spots. So how does Frances McDormand stay looking so young while being makeup free? That’s her secret. Though there are strategies for healthier skin as you age.
For starters, it’s important to use moisturizer on a daily basis, along with an exfoliating cleanser though less frequently.Sunscreen is also important, as the sun’s rays cause discoloration, dryness, aging, and even skin cancer.Natural ingredients like Aloe Vera, Castor Oil, Papaya, Buttermilk, and Lemon Juice are great ways to treat and prevent skin blemishes.
Water, food, and exercise all play a role in the way our skin looks.
Of course, there are also plenty of non-surgical cosmetic procedures to consider like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, collagen injections, and laser treatments. These are non-invasive procedures that don’t fall into the same category as traditional plastic surgery while providing many of the same benefits.
What method works best ultimately depends on the reason for the blemishes. They can be caused by many factors, including hygiene and health. Face mapping is a great way to determine the root cause. This Ayurvedic method uses the area experiencing blemishes to locate the root cause in your body.
Wearing makeup, like plastic surgery, is a personal choice we all make for ourselves one way or another. While it’s often perceived as a “need,” it’s more of a “want,” and you should be careful to understand the problems associated with wearing makeup.
Time Magazine reports that between 2004 and 2016, the FDA received over 5,000 health-related complaints due to cosmetics.
Frances McDormand is wise beyond her years for ushering in a new age of women proudly showing off no-makeup looks. The trend is embraced by Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Kylie Jenner, Gal Gadot, and more. Try it for yourself.
